When you become disabled as a result of a physical or mental illness or injury, and you have paid into the social security system, you are entitled to social security disability benefits if you can prove that you are unable to engage in what social security calls “substantial gainful activity.” The Social Security Administration has an elaborate process for determining who is and who is not disabled.
